Questions About Ireland's Parks & Trails
Get answers about Phoenix Park, Lough Key, Ballinastoe, and the Wild Atlantic Way
The main circular route takes about 90 minutes at a steady pace, covering roughly 8.5 km. If you want to explore landmarks like the Wellington Monument, Papal Cross, and wildlife areas, plan for 2-3 hours. There's also a shorter 3 km family route that takes about 45 minutes.
Absolutely. The park has 5 different trails ranging from easy lakeside walks to moderate hill climbs. We recommend starting with the red or blue trails if you're new to hiking—they're well-marked and take 30-60 minutes. The tree canopy and lake views make them really rewarding without being strenuous.
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal—you'll get mild weather, fewer crowds, and great wildlife visibility. Summer works too, but trails get busier. Winter's beautiful for dramatic coastal walks on the Wild Atlantic Way, though coastal winds can be strong.
Ballinastoe has trails for different skill levels. The green and blue trails are suitable for intermediate riders with basic technical skills, while red trails need experience with jumps and features. We don't recommend this spot if you're just learning—start on easier purpose-built trails first.
Yes, that's actually how most people experience it. The coastal path stretches 160 km from Clare to Galway, but you can tackle individual sections—many are 30 minutes to 2 hours each. Doolin Cliff Walk and the path near Fanore are particularly stunning and very manageable as standalone walks.
Phoenix Park is very family-friendly with flat, paved paths and playgrounds. Lough Key has accessible sections and visitor facilities. The Wild Atlantic Way sections vary—some are pushchair-friendly, others are rough terrain. Ballinastoe isn't suitable for young kids. We'd recommend checking our detailed guides for each location to find family-appropriate routes.
